Description:

Roosevelt Theodore

Single page TLS, on Metropolitan, 432 Fourth Ave, New York letterhead, 8.25" x 10.5". Dated "July 1st, 1916", and boldly signed by Theodore Roosevelt as "Theodore Roosevelt". Fading to the type, leaving the letter very light but readable, however Roosevelts signature remains bold and clear. Expected folds with faint handling marks. Presented matted, framed and glazed with both a plaque and a black and white photo print of Roosevelt to a completed size of 17" x 13".

A lovely TLS written to Hon John Skelton Williams, Controller of the Currency, Washington DC stating:

"My dear Mr. Williams,

I thank you for your courtesy in sending me your letter and the enclosure. It was very kind of you, and I wish to express my appreciation."

In 1916 Roosevelt was encouraged by many to run for president again, with the Progressive Party re-nominating him. However Roosevelt turned down the nomination for both personal and political reasons. Roosevelt had developed a strong dislike for President Wilson, whom he believed was allowing Germany and other warring European nations to "bully" the United States. Convinced that running again on a third-party ticket would give the election to Wilson and the Democrats, he gave his support to the Republican Hughes.

After Roosevelt’s refusal to run, the Progressive Party quickly fell apart. Most of its members returned to the Republican Party.
