Description:

Roosevelt Theodore

Small archive comprised of materials related to future 26th U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt (1858-1919) and his “Rough Riders”. This volunteer cavalry regiment, led by then Colonel Roosevelt, participated in several dramatic engagements during the 1898 Spanish-American War, notably the Charge at San Juan Hill. Includes a handsome first edition hardcover copy of Edward Marshall’s "Story of the Rough Riders"; an ALS on “Roosevelt’s Rough-Riders Reunion Association” stationery with companion envelope; and an undated period albumen black and white photograph possibly showing some Oklahoma cavalrymen.

“Rough, tough, we’re the stuff, we want to fight, and we can’t get enough, whoo-pee!”

– Official slogan of Roosevelt’s Rough Riders.

First edition hardcover copy of Edward Marshall’s "The Story of the Rough Riders, 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, the Regiment in Camp and on the Battlefield", with illustrations and photographs by Richard F. Outcault, published by G.W. Dillingham Co. (New York) in 1899. With a light brown cloth binding and pictorial front cover and spine decorated in gilt, black, gray, and brown. This 320-page book includes a detailed history of the regiment, tracing its progress from Texas to the Caribbean to New York, as well as an official Historical Record, and Roster. Also features nineteen full page photographs and illustrations as well as numerous margin or partial page ones. The front cover has one stray black mark, and there is an ex-library stamp interior front board. Book with good hinges. Overall light toning, and clean and unmarked pages. Isolated foxing to frontispiece photograph “Colonel Theodore Roosevelt in the Field”, title page, and spine. Expected superficial wear to cover corners. Book measures 5.625” x 8”.

1pp ALS on “Roosevelt’s Rough-Riders Reunion Association, Will Entertain the Rough Riders at Oklahoma City, July 1, 2, 3, 4, 1900” stationery inscribed overall and signed in purple pencil by “J.E. Dowell”. At top, a gorgeously printed vignette of Teddy Roosevelt on horseback charging into a stylized map of the southwestern United States, further adorned by scroll and block lettering. J.E. Dowell, a self-described First Lieutenant of the First Oklahoma Volunteers, wrote this letter to his mother from Arko City, Kansas. Dowell might have belonged to the 1st Infantry Regiment, Oklahoma Volunteer Militia that was first formed in 1890. The group was later consolidated into the 1st Regimental Territorial Volunteers and earmarked for military service with Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, but they missed most of the action. This could explain both why First Lieutenant J.E. Dowell is not listed in the Rough Rider Roster, and also how he came across Rough Rider 2nd Reunion stationery.

The envelope postmarked June 23, 1900 is addressed to “E.F.M. Dowell, Shenandoah, Va.” and bears a cancelled red 2 cent Washington stamp, with expected wear including one letter-opened end.

The period albumen black and white photograph mounted on a buff colored textured mat shows a group of eleven tough-looking cowboys, who might have belonged to Teddy Roosevelt’s Oklahoma Territory cavalrymen, or perhaps Dowell’s First Oklahoma Volunteers. With expected wear including water stain to left edge. Actual size of photograph measures 3.25” x 2.25”.

A strikingly visual collection of Teddy Roosevelt and Rough Rider memorabilia!
