Description:

"The Press" Newspaper "The Abolition of Slavery in the District of Columbia..."

4pp, measuring 20.25" x 28.5", Philadelphia, dated April 4, 1862. An issue of the Philadelphia newspaper "The Press", Vol. 5 - No. 207, detailing the abolition of slavery within the District of Columbia. With additional articles, "The Movement of Gen. Buell's Army", "From Fortress Monroe…Three Thousand Rebels Dispersed…No Signs of the Merrimac…", "Numerous Desertions From the Rebel Regiments" and "General Rosecrans' Farewell to His Soldiers." The newspaper has flattened folds with light edge toning throughout. Almost entirely separated at the center vertical fold. Minor edge chipping. Good.

The article on the abolition of slavery reads in part: "…The number of slaves who will be liberated by this act is only about fifteen hundred or two thousand, and those who wish to secure their freedom have so many opportunities of escaping from their masters, that a large proportion of the latter will regard the sum appropriated by the law as a liberal compensation for any pecuniary loss it will cause…The passage, in the United States Senate, on Wednesday, of the [Emancipation] resolution in favor of co-operation with the Slave States in aid of emancipation, whenever their citizens are willing to abolish slavery, marks an important era in the history of the country…"

Slavery had existed in the nation's capital from the time it was built, with slave dealers auctioning off men, women, and children up until the Compromise of 1850. In the years leading up to the Civil War, Washington, D.C. became the focus of numerous abolitionist movements, with activists stating that slavery in the capital was a disgrace to the country and its values. While the number of slaves in the city slowly decreased during the 19th century, slavery would remain legal until April 16, 1862, when President Abraham Lincoln signed into law an act abolishing slavery in the District of Columbia.
