Description:

Ruth Babe 1895 - 1948 Larger-than-life, the Sultan of Swat inscribes the largest Babe Ruth photograph we have ever seen!

Framed display! Photograph Signed "To My good friend / Bill Hillman / From / Babe Ruth, 6-15-48." Sepia-tone, 19" x 24.75". Matted in Yankee pinstripe and framed to 27" x 33". Professionally restored with minor flaws. Most probably inscribed to veteran journalist and news commentator William Hillman (1895 - 1962) who, since 1945, had been a roving correspondent for the North American Newspaper Alliance.

Two days earlier, on June 13, 1948, Babe Ruth wore his Yankees uniform, number 3, for the last time. From the New York Daily News, in part, "Flanked by 16 teammates from the first championship club that ever played at the Stadium - the '23 Yankees - and other former greats in the proud history of the club, the Babe emerged from the dugout and pigeon-toed to home plate with a bat in his hand. The roars of the crowd of 49,641 billowed from the stands of 'The House That Ruth Built'... He stepped to the mike, his old uniform hanging loosely from his shoulders, which are bowed from the sickness which has so sapped his strength. His voice was husky as he said: 'I am proud I hit the first home run here. God knows who will hit the last one. It is great to see the men from 25 years ago back here today and it makes me feel proud to be with them.'" Two months later, on August 16, 1948, Babe Ruth died of throat cancer. He was 53.
