The Beatles

The Beatles Photo Signed on 1st Trip to "Ed Sullivan Show" in NYC to Receive Cashbox Award, Frank Caiazzo LOA
Signed photograph

A phenomenal glossy black and white photo of the Beatles in their iconic gray collarless suits. Measuring 8" x 10", [London, England], ca. 1963. Signed during their first trip to New York in February 1964 by all four members: "Paul McCartney", "John Lennon", "George Harrison" and "Ringo Starr". Bearing the handstamp of photographer Dezo Hoffman on verso, with pencil notations above. Together with an additional six vintage photographs by Hoffman taken during the trip. Exhibits scattered creasing and a few small tears near edges, with light soiling to corners of verso. Staple holes present to three out of four sides. The first half of Paul's signature is lightened due to poor ink flow. Otherwise, very good with desirable provenance!

Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from noted Beatles expert Frank Caiazzo, dated December 28, 2013. Reading in part:

"This photograph was signed in February of 1964, during the Beatles' first historic visit to New York. The signatures were obtained by Marty Ostrow, the editor of Cashbox magazine, who met with The Beatles at the Plaza Hotel- where they were staying during their time in New York- which adds tremendously to desirability, being a scarce and highly coveted 'first visit' set of autographs."

In order to compete with larger music magazines like Billboard, Cashbox covered more of the international music scene and had picked up on the Beatles before most other American publications. When the Beatles came to New York, Ostrow was invited to meet the band and producer George Martin, to show appreciation for his magazine's generous early coverage. They also obliged him by having Hoffman, who was along on the trip, take photos of each member holding the magazine. It was during this same visit when the band made their debut on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, effectively launching American "Beatlemania".

Dezo Hoffman (1912-1986) was a notable music and entertainment photographer best known for his work with the Beatles, which began in 1962 when the band was still largely unknown. Besides the Fab Four, Hoffman also photographed celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Jimi Hendrix.
