Von Steuben ADS Addressed to B. Walker, His former Aide and Military "Son"
ADS

Baron Friedrich von Steuben autograph document signed. 1 p., 7.875" x 3.75"; no place; January 25, no year. A financial document entirely in his hand and signed, "Steuben" adding his paraph. Together with an engraving of the Baron on horseback. Docketing on verso. Reinforced with cello tape at both vertical edges and folds. Ink remains bold, with overall excellent presentation.

Undated, but circa 1790s, the document directs the recipient Colonel Benjamin Walker to: "Please to send me by the Bearer a check on the Banck for fifty Dollars." Addressed at bottom left to, "Coll: B : Walker" and with notes at right: "Jan 26 for him on Rec 20 dolls / [Jan] 28 sent by White [?] 30…"

After the Revolutionary War, von Steuben faced significant financial troubles. Despite his critical contributions as inspector general and drill master of the Continental Army, von Steuben was never fully compensated for his service. He relied on his former aide de camp, Benjamin Walker, and William North to assist him in managing his affairs. Walker (to whom this draft is addressed) in particular played a key role, helping von Steuben navigate the complex bureaucracy in his attempts to secure a land grant or military pension from the Continental Congress.
