Description:

"Taxation No Tyranny": Samuel Johnson's Rebuttal of Patriot Claims of Taxation Without Representation

A pamphlet containing Tory writer Samuel Johnson's spirited defense of England, in response to the "Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms" issued by the Second Continental Congress on July 6, 1775, as well as other American explanations of their political discontentment. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), "Taxation No Tyranny; An Answer to the Resolutions and Address of the American Congress, The Third Edition" (London: Printed for T. Cadell, in the Strand, 1775.) Disbound, with remnants of a leather spine. Lacking the half title. The title page is lightly dusted. Expected wear including toning and scattered foxing, else very good. 91pp. 5" x 8.25" x .25."

Johnson's pamphlet title, "Taxation No Tyranny," refutes the idea of taxation without representation, one of the principal grievances lodged by the Americans. Printed in the same year as the first edition, this pamphlet rebuts the "very loud clamours" and "many wild assertions" of ingrates "who have denied to the parliament of Britain the right of taxing the American colonies." England, Johnson continues, has "the supreme power" to demand "such contributions as are necessary to the public safety or the public prosperity." Johnson mocks the colonists' myth that the first settlers "fled from tyranny to rocks and deserts," and explodes the theory that Americans, "who having worked hard for bread in a wild country'are now invaded by unprecedented oppression, and plundered of their properties by the harpies of taxation'"
