Description:

Swiss Sculptor Alberto Giacometti 1931 ALS

GIACOMETTI, Alberto. Autograph Letter Signed, "Alberto", in French, 1p, 8.25" x 10.75", Maloja, September 23, 1931. Includes full translation. Expected folds and light wear, else near fine condition.

In the midst of his Surrealist period, the famed sculptor writes an amusing letter from his familial home in Switzerland about his work process, coming to the conclusion that his work is "probably not nothing". Composed in black fountain pen to his childhood friend Alice Hirschfeld, in full, "Dear Alice / Thank you for your kind letter, I was happy to hear news from you. / We are leaving tomorrow and I'm thinking of probably stopping in Zurich, where I'll be arriving at 8:30, I think. / I will call you when I arrive and I hope to see you. / Here it's windy, icy, sunny, cloudy, a little snow, it's like November, or more like October, and very beautiful. / I'm working, or rather, I'm hardly working at all, it would be difficult for me to say what I'm doing, but probably not nothing. / Now I'm going to the post office. / See you soon, maybe tomorrow. / Alberto".

Alberto's sister Ottilia then adds, "Dear Alice - My most cordial greetings. How is Madeline? Unfortunately, I did not find anything at Madame Nagel's, I would like to have a couple things in Zurich, but I'm afraid it will be difficult this year. Around October 15 I will also come to Z, but I think you will be in Italy. I will nonetheless try to call you. / Best wishes Ottilia".

Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) was a Swiss sculptor, painter, draftsman and printmaker. Beginning in 1922, he lived and worked mainly in Paris but regularly visited his hometown Borgonovo to see his family and work on his art. His work was particularly influenced by artistic styles such as Cubism and Surrealism. Giacometti was one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century.
