Description:

Modern Artist Moïse Kisling ALS to French Poet Max Jacob

A postcard, inscribed in French by Polish-French artist Moïse Kisling (1891-1953), and signed by him as "Kiki Exp.p. Kisling 'da Berle'" in the message section. (One of Moïse's nicknames was "Kiki.") Dated October 26, 1923 and mailed from Gassin, France. The postcard image depicts an old street in Gassin, a small town located about halfway between Marseilles and Nice and 8 km south of Saint-Tropez. Bearing a cancelled green 10-centimes Louis Pasteur French postage stamp and several hand-stamped philatelic markings. Expected wear including light overall toning, else near fine. 3.5" x 5.375." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

Moïse Kisling sent this postcard to his friend, French poet Max Jacob (1876-1944). Translated in part: "I hope that you are still well and that you will not forget me at all - I am still waiting with impatience - a word and your books that you promised me from you…"

Moïse Kisling and Max Jacob had met in Paris in the 1910s after Kisling had emigrated to France from Kraków in what was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Kisling and Jacob socialized with many luminaries of the expatriate Cubist scene in Paris, including Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and Amedeo Modigliani. Max Jacob was one of the first friends that Picasso made in Paris; he taught the Spaniard French and was also his roommate. Kisling and Jacob were both Jewish though their fates were very different. Kisling fled to the United States in 1940. Jacob died in a Vichy internment camp at Drancy in 1944.
