Civil War

Superb Printed Material Relating to the Confederacy, Including a First Edition Copy of Caleb Huse's The Supplies for the Confederate Army

Two pieces of printed matter relating to the Confederate States of America, including a first edition copy of Caleb Huse's The Supplies for the Confederate Army, and a partial imprint of the Ordinances Adopted by the Convention of Virginia at the Adjourned Session in June-July 1861.

The lot is comprised of:

1. First edition copy of Caleb Huse's The Supplies for the Confederate Army: How They Were Obtained in Europe and How Paid For, Personal Reminiscences and Unpublished History (Boston, Massachusetts: T.R. Marvin & Son, 1904). Dark gray wrappers. The frontispiece depicts Huse with a long white beard. With a facsimile page showing a war dated cotton warrant located near the back of the booklet. Expected wear including toning and scattered foxing, else very good to near fine. 36pp. 6.125" x 9". 8vo.

The booklet was privately published at the behest of Huse's friends, who delighted in his war stories, just one year before his death at the age of 73. Caleb Huse (1831-1905), a Massachusetts-born West Point graduate and military academy instructor, sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War. Huse eventually earned the rank of Major in the C.S.A. and became their principal Purchasing Agent abroad. It's speculated that Huse secured a total $10 million worth of munitions--including priceless rifles and field artillery--for the Confederacy during the Civil War. He negotiated contracts primarily with the United Kingdom and Austria, but also with Prussia, Bohemia, and France. Huse's narrative recounts some of the difficulties in obtaining these contracts and shipping the munitions to the factory-poor and heavily blockaded Confederacy.

2. A partial imprint of the Ordinances Adopted by the Convention of Virginia at the Adjourned Session in June-July 1861 (Richmond, Virginia: William F. Ritchie, 1861). Separated from the rest of the booklet, this section covers pp. 45-73. Partially detached binding. Overall toning, else very good to near fine. 5.375" x 8.375". 8vo.

These ordinances followed Virginia's agreement to join the Confederate States of America in April 1861. They pertained to such municipal issues as: the construction and repair of transportation infrastructure; the levying and outfitting of armed forces; election procedure; governmental and military oversight; and criminal code. Of particular interest are Ordinance No. 56, which reserved Virginia's right to secede from secessionists ("But this constitution is ratified and adopted by Virginia, with the distinct understanding on her part, that she expressly reserves to herself the right…to repeal and annul this ordinance, and to resume all the powers hereby granted to the confederate government…" ) and Ordinance No. 70, which classified any Virginian politician's involvement with the United States government as treason.

An invaluable addition to any Civil War collection!
