Horatio Seymour Signed Civil War Commissions, 3 Pcs

Three Civil War commissions, ca. October 1861 - November 1863, including two signed by Horatio Seymour (1810-1886), 18th Governor of New York and future 1868 Democratic Party presidential candidate. All three war dated documents relate to the military promotions of George W. Travers, an officer of the 46th Regiment of Infantry of the New York State Volunteers. Also known as the "Fremont Rifle" regiment, the 46th was composed of mostly German-American soldiers from New York City. Members of the regiment enlisted for a 3-year-long term and saw action in South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

The lot, featuring gorgeous "Excelsior" state seal vignettes, includes:

1. 1p document on paper signed in Albany, New York on October 21, 1861, recognizing Travers's promotion to Captain. Signed by Edwin Denison Morgan (1811-1883), 21st Governor of New York, as "E.D. Morgan" at lower right, and by New York Adjutant General Thomas Hillhouse at lower left. With embossed seal at lower left. Docketed verso. The outer edges have been folded and secured verso. A central horizontal crease has been repaired with tape. Else near fine. 13.875" x 10.75".

2. 1p document on vellum signed in Albany, New York on February 13, 1863, recognizing Travers's promotion to Lieutenant Colonel. Signed by Governor Horatio Seymour as "Horatio Seymour" at lower right, and by New York Adjutant General John T. Sprague at lower left. With embossed seal at lower left. Expected folds and scattered discoloration. Two holes punched out along bottom. Else near fine. 16.75" x 13".

3. 1p document on vellum signed in Albany, New York on November 25, 1863, recognizing Travers's promotion to Colonel. Signed by Governor Horatio Seymour as "Horatio Seymour" at lower right, and by an unidentified Acting New York Adjutant at lower left. With embossed seal at lower left. Expected folds and scattered stains, else near fine. 15.875" x 11.5".

Horatio Seymour served two non-consecutive terms as Governor of New York, from 1853-54, and from 1863-1864. In 1868, Seymour was soundly defeated by Civil War hero Ulysses S. Grant, who was running on the Republican ticket. Grant trumped Seymour 214 Electoral College votes to 80 and garnered 300,000 more popular votes.
