Description:

Stanford White TLS with Sketch Designs, Outstanding

Signed "Yours Truly, Stamford White" and addressed to Melville E. Stone Esq. 1p, measuring 7.75" x 10.25", New York, dated March 9, 1896. White accepts an invitation to design the cover art for "The Monument Souvenir Edition of Eugene Field's of field flowers" and provides two small sketches at the bottom blank margin. The drawings are his designs of the front cover and the spine of the book. The letter has flattened mail folds, light edge toning, and a few contemporary ink spots. Boldly signed.

Stanford White (1853-1906) was an American architect who designed numerous houses, buildings, and monuments, including the Washington Square Arch. However, White may best be known for his involvement with model Evelyn Nesbit (the inspiration of the "Gibson Girl") and his subsequent murder by millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw in 1906. White was shot and killed in front of a large audience during a performance at the Madison Square Theatre by Thaw, who had become obsessed with rumors that White had drugged, assaulted, and later had a relationship with Evelyn, starting when she was just 16. Thaw himself had become dangerously obsessed with Nesbit and pursued her until she finally relented and married him in 1905. On June 25, 1906, Thaw and Nesbit attended the theater, where they encountered White. During the show's finale, Thaw fired three point-blank shots at White, who was killed instantly. The resulting scandal, which included sex, jealousy, and public murder among the wealthy elites causes a public sensation, and the resulting trial was known as "The Trial of the Century."
