Stan Laurel's Tax Returns from "Music Box" & "County Hospital" Year! Most Iconic Laurel & Hardy Films
Document

Stan Laurel's, of Laurel and Hardy fame, personal copy of his 1932 Form 1040-C "Individual Income Tax Return, boldly signed by the legendary comedian himself. In 1932, during the period covered by this tax return, Stan Laurel starred in some of Laurel and Hardy's most iconic short films, including the Academy Award winning "The Music Box" and the slapstick comedy "County Hospital," both of which reflect the peak of his cinematic success and the income documented in this archive. The carbon portion of the document includes Laurel's personal and financial information, such as his occupation ("Actor") and address at 718 N. Bedford Drive, Beverly Hills, California. The form was filed as part of Laurel's temporary departure from the United States and boldly signed in blue ink as "Stan Laurel" at the bottom, dated June 30, 1932. All documents display expected age toning and minor edge wear; however, the contents remain legible throughout, and Laurel's full signature on the return is bold, clear, and well-preserved. Accompanied by a signed Statement of Authenticity from his daughter, Lois Laurel Hawes. The documents measure 8" x 10".

This historically significant grouping is additionally accompanied by a comprehensive archive of original U.S. Treasury and IRS correspondence related to Stan Laurel's 1930 tax year, all filed in 1932. The archive includes a March 26, 1931 IRS letter noting a $100.44 underpayment, followed by a formal Certificate of Overassessment refunding $490.34 to Laurel. Also present is an IRS audit acceptance notice dated March 22, 1932, along with multiple letters addressed to Laurel's wife, Mrs. Lois Laurel, discussing assessments and final adjustments. A detailed tax liability breakdown confirms the final figures owed and refunded.

In 1932, at the height of their comedic fame, Laurel and Hardy released several iconic short films that contributed significantly to their legacy in early sound cinema. Among them was The Music Box, released in April, which won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short (Comedy) and remains one of their most celebrated works. Other notable releases that year include County Hospital, a slapstick romp set in a medical ward; Scram!, a misadventure involving mistaken identity and alcohol, which was briefly banned in the UK; and Their First Mistake, a sentimental yet humorous take on parenthood. These films, produced during the exact period covered by Stan Laurel's 1932 tax return, underscore his professional peak and directly reflect the earnings documented in the archive.

Stan Laurel (1890–1965) was a British-born comic actor, writer, and director best known as half of the legendary comedy duo Laurel and Hardy. With his trademark bowler hat, expressive face, and impeccable timing, Laurel helped define early screen comedy, transitioning seamlessly from silent films to talkies. Beyond performing, he was the creative force behind much of the team's material, often writing or shaping scripts and gags behind the scenes. Over a prolific career spanning from vaudeville to international film stardom, Laurel earned a reputation not only for his comedic brilliance but also for his humility and dedication to fans—personally answering correspondence until his final years in Santa Monica.
