Stan Laurel on Meeting Hardy & Role as Chaplin Understudy! Incredible Content!
TLS

Typed Letter Signed (TLS) from legendary comedian Stan Laurel, dated May 1st, 1964, composed on The Oceana Apartment Hotel letterhead in Santa Monica, California. The letter is addressed to Ralph Celentano and is signed clearly in black ink at the conclusion, "Stan Laurel", with his name also typed directly below. Accompanied by original mailing envelope. In fine condition, some toning and remnants of prior mounting, boldly signed. The letter measures 7" x 9.75".

The content of the letter is densely packed with Laurel's reflections on his early career, his partnership with Oliver Hardy, and his professional connection (and distinction) from Charlie Chaplin. Laurel discusses in detail how he met his legendary counterpart Oliver Hardy and states the first film he appeared in with Oliver Hardy entitled "A Lucky Dog," a silent two-reeler, and refers to his time writing and directing at Hal Roach Studios. He corrects a common misconception that he acted in films with Chaplin, explaining that he only served as Chaplin's understudy during their time in vaudeville. The tone is warm, informative, and filled with admiration for Chaplin, whom he defends against Cold War-era accusations of Communism, calling such claims "ridiculous & unfounded – just an example of ‘SMEARING' peoples character." He also mentions enclosing an autographed photo and returning a tape from the recipient, noting his preference for written correspondence over recordings.

In Full:

"Dear Ralph Celentano:

Thanks for the taped letter recd. this AM. it is most interesting. The film that Mr Hardy first met & appeared with me was titled "A Lucky Dog" - a silent two reeler produced by the famous "Broncho" Billy Anderson, I starred in a series of films for him known as the "Sunkist Comedies" Mr Hardy just appeared in one of these - the one you mention - I met him again a few years later at the Hal Roach Studio where I was writing & directing at that time.

Re all the questions - am afraid its impossible to describe & explain, so suggest you write to Doubleday Co. Inc. 575 Madison Ave New York. 22. N.Y. they published a book titled "Mr Laurel & Mr Hardy" written by John McCabe, this will cover all the information you are interested to know about L&H. it gives correct listing of films, dates etc. & photographs - authentic & reliable.

Interesting to hear about your hobbies - collecting old phonographs, projectors, recordings & films etc. - should be quite valuable in future years. Re your mention that I was a ‘Stand In' for Chas Chaplin - I did not ‘stand in' for him in films - was never in films with Chaplin. I only worked on the Stage with him in Vaudeville & was his ‘UNDERSTUDY' - meaning; if he happened to take ill or unable to appear in the show, I replaced him for those particular performances, a ‘stand in' is a different situation entirely. Incidently, I have great admiration & respect for Charlie Chaplin - all this talk about him being a Commie is utterly ridiculous & unfounded - just an example of ‘SMEARING' peoples character in which he was made a victim.

With pleasure I enclose you an autographed picture - am also returning your tape under seperate cover which you provided. I never for several reasons make personal tape recordings - I much prefer this mode of correspondence.

Again my thanks & every good wish.?

Very sincerely –?

Stan Laurel"

Stan Laurel (1890–1965) was a British-born comic actor, writer, and director best known as half of the legendary comedy duo Laurel and Hardy. With his trademark bowler hat, expressive face, and impeccable timing, Laurel helped define early screen comedy, transitioning seamlessly from silent films to talkies. Beyond performing, he was the creative force behind much of the team's material, often writing or shaping scripts and gags behind the scenes. Over a prolific career spanning from vaudeville to international film stardom, Laurel earned a reputation not only for his comedic brilliance but also for his humility and dedication to fans—personally answering correspondence until his final years in Santa Monica.
