Sloop Humbird is Chartered for a Voyage from Colonial Newport, Rhode Island to Martinique & the West Indies with Undefined Goals - Likely Trading for Slaves



Manuscript Document Signed, "Solo. Townsend," and "Wm. Richardson," two pages, front and verso, 7.5" x 12", integral leaf docketed on verso, April 13, 1763, Newport, Rhode Island. A charter hiring the Sloop Humbird, owned by Joseph Scott, for a voyage "to Martinico (Martinique) in the West Indies & back again to Newport ...or from Martinico to the Islands of Granada, St. Luce and St. Vincent or either of them & then to said Newport." Scalloped upper edge. Minor staining, light edge wear, folds, completely legible in fine condition.



The charter does not specify the type of cargo the Humbird will be conveying from the West Indies, although it most likely would have been sugar, molasses, and slaves. In full: "This Charter Party indented and made this thirteenth Day of April in the third year of his Majesty's Reign George the third King of Great Britain &c Anno Dom: of 63. Between Joseph Scott of Newport in the County of Newport in the Colony of Rhode Island &c Esq. Owner of the Sloop Humbird burthen about sixty Tons now in the Harbour of Newport aforesaid of the one Part And Solomon Townsend and William Richardson both of Newport aforesaid Merchants of the other Part Witnesseth that the said Joseph Scott hath demised granted and to freight cotton? and by those Presents doth demise grant and to freight & let unto the said Solomon Townsend and William Richardson their Factors and Assigns the aforesaid Sloop Humbird with all her Tackle appareles and Appurtenances for one whole Voyage to be made in and with said Sloop from Newport aforesaid to Martinico in the West Indies & back again to Newport aforesaid or from Martinico to the Islands of Granada St. Luce and St. Vincent or either of them & then to said Newport. And the said Joseph Scott doth covenant and promise At his own Cost & Charge to fit said Vessele compleatly for the Seas For and in Consideration whereof the said Solomon Townsend and William Richardson do hereby covenant & promise to pay or cause to be paid unto the said Joseph Scott for the Hires of said Sloop & appurtenances the Sum of five hundred and fifty pounds in good Bills of Publick Credit of said Colony old Tenor per month and and for every month during said Voyage and at their Own Cost and Charge to victuals and man said Sloop pay Port Charge and all other charges accruing on said Voyage except what shall accure on said Sloop And to Risque said Sloop during said Voyage that is to say the said Sloop and Appurtenances being valued at eight Thousand pounds in Bills of Credit of said Colony old Tenor If therefore the said Sloop shall be Founderd at Sea , castaway taken by the Enemy siez'd confiscated or any otherwise lost or destroyed during s'd Voyage then the said Solomon Townsend and William Richardson shall pay or cause to be paid unto the said Joseph Scott for said Sloop and Appurtenances the said Sum of eight thousand pounds in good Bills of Publick Credit of said Colony old Tenor. And in case any part of said Sloop and Appurtenances shall be sav'd the same shall be the Property of the said Solomon Townsend and William Richardson. And for the true and faithfull performance of this present Charter Party and every Clause and Article thereof the Parties to these Present bind themselves their Heirs, Executors and Admins each to the other firmly by these presents. And have hereunto interchangeably set their Hands and Seals the Day and year first above written / Signd Seald & Deliverd / in the Presence of us/ "Solo. Townsend" /" Wm.
