Geronimo

Signature of Geronimo & the General Who Negotiated his Surrender, Nelson A. Miles, In a Unique Autograph Album

A late 19th century scrapbook, containing approximately thirty signatures of various dignitaries and celebrities of the period, accomplished on cards and affixed to the album pages including Geronimo, who signs "GERONIMO" in pencil on a 3.5 x 1.75" slip of blue paper, as well as the general who convinced him to surrender in 1886, Nelson A. Miles, who signs, "Nelson A. Miles Major General U.S. Army" on a 3.75 x 2.25" card. The album measures 9.5" x 12.25", contains 68 unpaginated leaves, and is bound in soft black leatherette wraps. Wraps and spine rubbed, especially at corners, light toning to pages, else very good condition.

An unusual association piece bringing two of the most famous figures of the Indian Wars of the late nineteenth century. Miles had replaced General George Crook in 1886 to pursue Geronimo in Arizona and negotiated the surrender of the Apache leader later the same year. It appears that Miles' signature was obtained by this collector during the Spanish American War, as other luminaries from the period appear in the same album including McKinley's War and Navy Secretaries, Russel A. Alger and Garret A. Hobart, as well as Generals William R. Shafter, Wesley Merritt, and John R. Brooke. Other military figures include John J. Pershing, Lew Wallace, William S. Rosecrans, and James Forsyth. The original owner also obtained the signatures of other popular figures of the period including William Jennings Bryan, Levi P. Morton, Eugene Field, James Whitcomb Riley, Palmer Cox, Julia Marlowe, Joseph Jefferson, and many others.
