George III of England King

King George III Important Rev. War Document to Pay "Mad" General Benjamin Carpenter

Single page manuscript document, 8" x 13. Written on watermarked laid paper. Dated "May 25, 1781", and boldly signed by George III at the top of the document. Expected folds, edgewear commensurate with age, now expertly repaired and strengthened along outer edges. Accompanied by a second docketing sheet stating 'Warrant for the Pay of the 4th Regiment Dragoons, 365 days to 24th December 1779"., 8" x 9.5", with toning and chipping to outer edges.

A lovely King George III signed document as an order to pay General Benjamin Carpenter,  "Our Will and Pleasure is that out of such monies as are in or shall come to your hand for the use of our Land Force you pay unto Our Trusty and Wellbeloved Lieutenant General Benjamin Carpenter the Sum of Fifteen Thousand seven Hundred and Eighteen Pounds, Eighteen shilling and four pence … to be due to our 4th Regiment of Dragoons under his command for their Pay from 25th December 1778 to 24th December 1779 … ". General Carpenter was a great favourite with King George III, however both later went insane. By 1788, Carpenter got drunk and deliberately went to Hyde Park at about five in the morning, and drowned himself in the Serpentine river.

King George III  was born in London on June 4, 1738. He was the son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and the grandson of George II. He succeeded his grandfather in 1760, his father having died in 1751. George III was the first of the House of Hanover to be born and educated as an Englishman. He had high but impractical ideas of kingship. George III was the longest reigning of the male British monarchs. George III was king of Great Britain and Ireland and presided over the loss of the American colonies. Although never an autocratic monarch, George III was always a powerful force in politics. He was a strong supporter of the war against America, and he viewed the concession of independence in 1783 with such detestation that he considered abdicating his throne.

An excellent example of a George III signed document with a fantastic reference.
