Description:

Remington Samuel

PSA/DNA slabbed check graded Mint 9 and signed by Samuel Remington as “S. Remington” in lower right corner. The unnumbered partly printed and partly handwritten cream-colored check dated October 31, 1869 from Ilion, New York features a Curtiss & White (Utica, NY) print of a standing aproned blacksmith at left. The $2 check was to be paid out from the “Ilion Bank”, whose title appears in bi-colored and foreshortened block letters. With expected light wear including a v-shaped tear at middle center, a deckled upper edge, and a few darkened thumbprints, none of which substantially affect the signature. The check measures 7.375" x 2.625"while the slab measures 9.5" x 4.5".

Eliphalet Remington (1793-1861) aka Eliphalet Remington II’s hugely successful firearms manufacturing company originated in blacksmithing. The younger Eliphalet learned the trade from his father, Eliphalet Remington (1768-1828) aka Eliphalet Remington I, and honed his skills at a central New York forge during his early 20s. Eliphalet Remington II introduced new rifle features, such as a solid steel barrel and a breech-loading capacity, that launched his fledgling firearms company. In 1828 Eliphalet Remington set up his factory in Illion, New York, which had close access to New York canalways. Later he fabricated pistols, typewriters, sewing machines, and agricultural tools. Remington incorporated his three sons into the firm, renaming it E. Remington & Sons. Between frontier expansion and the Civil War, demand for firearms increased and the company boomed. After Eliphalet Remington II’s death from a heart attack in 1861, his sons Philo (1816-1889), Samuel (1819-1882), and Eliphalet III (1828-1924) continued the business. In 1865, our check signer Samuel was appointed Vice-President of the E. Remington & Sons Company.

The American Civil War showcased the E. Remington & Sons military issue breech-loader rifle, and established the firm’s international reputation. Spain, Cuba, Denmark, Sweden, France, Egypt, Greece, Holland, Japan, and the United States placed large orders for weapons ranging from rifles to pistols by 1871. A local New York history reported that by 1879 “The company now turns out 18 different sizes and patterns of holster and other pistols, from the terribly effective single shot arm of 50 caliber, of a breech-loading system similar to the rifle, to the vest pocket companion, a toy weighing but 3 1/2 ozs., yet in the hands of an expert marksman true enough to kill a squirrel at 50 feet”.

From Eliphalet Remington I’s humble beginnings as a blacksmith, the E. Remington & Sons company had grown exponentially with each successive generation.
