Description:

Remington, Jr. Eliphalet

PSA/DNA slabbed check graded NM-MT 8 and signed by Eliphalet Remington as “E. Remington & Sons” in lower right corner. The unnumbered partly printed and partly handwritten pale blue check dated April 24, 1854 from Ilion, New York features a print of a standing blacksmith at left. The check, in the amount of $12.75, was to be paid out to one “E. Randall” by the "Cashier of Illion Bank"; it is endorsed by “E. Randall by B. Randall” verso. With expected light wear including a t-shaped tear at upper center, minor paper folds, and a few discolored spots, none of which affect the ornate signature. The check measures 7" x 2.5" while the slab measures 9.5" x 4.5".

Eliphalet Remington (1793-1861) aka Eliphalet Remington II’s hugely successful firearms manufacturing company originated in blacksmithing. The younger Eliphalet learned the trade from his father, Eliphalet Remington (1768-1828) aka Eliphalet Remington I, and honed his skills at a central New York forge during his early 20s. Eliphalet Remington II introduced new rifle features, such as a solid steel barrel and a breech-loading capacity, that launched his fledgling firearms company. In 1828 Eliphalet Remington set up his factory in Illion, New York, which had close access to New York canalways. Later he fabricated pistols, typewriters, sewing machines, and agricultural tools. Remington incorporated his three sons into the firm, renaming it E. Remington & Sons. Between frontier expansion and the Civil War, demand for firearms increased and the company boomed. After Eliphalet Remington II’s death from a heart attack in 1861, his sons Philo (1816-1889), Samuel (1819-1882), and Eliphalet III (1828-1924) continued the business.

Thus, the image of the blacksmith on the check held a special meaning for the Remington dynasty. The check signed “E. Remington Sons” also reflected a history of three generations in the metalwork industry, and two generations leading a dynamic and profitable firearms company.
