Rufus Ingalls, Civil War General Quartermaster, War Dated ANS Mentioning City Point, Virginia

A lovely display relating to Union General Quartermaster Rufus Ingalls (1818-1893), including a 1p autograph note signed with rank as "Rufus Ingalls / Br Genl + 1/4 M", a photographic print of Ingalls on horseback, and a biographical placard. Attractively matted and framed behind glass in a mahogany finished frame with gilt filet. Light expected wear to frame. Not examined out of frame. Overall size: 15.125" x 19.5" x .875".

The note was written on January 12, 1865 from U.S. Army Headquarters and was addressed to Ingalls's subordinate, Colonel G.W. Bradley, who served as Quartermaster of City Point, Virginia. On a cream blue-ruled paper slip. Expected folds and isolated minor stains, else near fine. 3.125" x 5".

In part:

"Respectfully referred to Col. Bradley 1/4 M City Point Depot who will call the attention of the Commd Officer of the RR Guard to the matter referred to within and who will see that they are more vigilant in the performance of their proper duties".

Rufus Ingalls graduated from West Point in 1843, alongside friend and later collaborator U.S. Grant. During his 40-year-long military career, Ingalls would serve in California and Oregon as well as in the Utah and New Mexico territories. Ingalls had functioned in the capacity of quartermaster since 1848, so during the Civil War, he returned to this role with the greatest ability. Ingalls supervised the supply chains of Grant's Army of the Potomac during the Siege of Petersburg (June 1864-April 1865). City Point was General U.S. Grant's headquarters as well as the army's main supply base. At this point in time, City Point was estimated to be the busiest port in the Western Hemisphere.
