Henry Ellis (1721-1806) was an Irish explorer, author and slave trader, born in County Monaghan, Ireland. He studied law before becoming an agent of a company seeking the discovery of the Northwest Passage. He published an account of his explorations in 1748 and in 1750. In August 1756, Lord Halifax, President of the Board of Trade, named Ellis lieutenant governor of Georgia. Ellis arrived in Savannah, Georgia on February 16, 1757 and was made royal governor. His administration of the colony was highly esteemed, and he established a peace treaty with the neighboring Muscogee Creek tribes. However, Georgia's climate took a toll on Ellis' health, and he had to return to England at the end of 1760.
