Description:

Richard Nixon 2 TLS with 3 Related Angry Letters to Nixon Re: Communism

A pair of typed letters signed by Richard Nixon, accompanied by three related letters from Georgia L. Maxey to Nixon. The first letter, signed "Dick", is dated January 12, 1948 and is addressed to Mrs. Frank L. Maxey. Nixon, as a congressman, responds to campaign plans to be held in Temple City, California. The second letter, signed "Dick Nixon", is dated June 24, 1977 and is addressed to Hon. Elford A. Cederberg. The letter discusses Julie, Nixon's daughter, and the publication of her book "Special People." The three accompanying letters are from Georgia Maxey to Nixon, dated March 15, August 18, and November 3, 1960, in which she expresses her increasing discontent at Nixon and the current administration's response to a Communist threat. The final letter, in which Mrs. Maxey states "this letter will end any friendliness between us", has been marked in an unknown hand [likely a secretary] to be given "No answer obviously." All of the letters have flattened mail folds, with varying degrees of toning, creasing, wear, and minor soiling. The two letters have been boldly signed by Nixon.

Highlights from the group include:
1. January 12, 1948: "'You certainly have gone right to work on the Temple City situation and I am most pleased with the people you have selected to head up the campaign'That is really fast work and a read achievement in such a short tim'I am enclosing a copy of a letter which I have written to Mr. Turner which is self-explanatory. Incidentally, however, I do not think his editorial was too bad and probably a little criticism from time to time is justified'"
2. June 24, 1977 [on "Special People"]: "'While I must admit to a bit of parental prejudice, I hope you will find, as I have, that it portrays insight into the very sensitive lives of some of the famous personalities of our tim'"
3. March 15, 1960 [Maxey to Nixon]: "After several years of silence, tho not complete inactivity, I find my hat back in the ring again. Certainly, I have no personal aspirations of any sort, but find my blood pressure as an American at the explosion point'The situation here in California under Brown is almost unbearable. However, in a way, perhaps it will serve it's purpose in awakening people to do something about it. Surely he is doing all he can to bury the knife in his own back. Even the Democrats are against him'"
4. August 18, 1960 [Maxey to Nixon]: "'at our Republican meeting after Bruce Reagan mentioned the California Democratic Council platform advocating the removal of the words 'under God' in our Pledge of Allegiance and the abolition of the House Unamerican Activities Committee, I was astounded when one of our own members, a 'young' Republican spoke up in favor of the above. He is not the first supposedly sensible young person to speak so in my presence. I am convinced that now is the last possible moment for us to institute drastic measures to save our United States. We must outlaw the Communist Party. We must sever relations with Soviet Russia. We must retain the Connolly Reservation. The Russian Communists'have spent over twenty years brainwashing our children and doing a mighty fine job of it'Better a war than that we should live to see our children and grandchildren suffer the living death of existence under a red flag."
5. November 3, 1960 [Maxey to Nixon]: "'I'm quite sure this letter will end any friendliness between us, and I don't mind telling you I DON'T CAR'If we lose this election, and thus our United States to Communism, it cannot be blamed on the people. Real Americans in both parties have been crying for a REAL PATRIOTIC campaign for some years'Apparently, all the strategists had to offer us is the watered down, phoney mixture of Rockafeller, Warren, and the Republicrats. Why -- Why -- Why --???? In the past you have thought for yourself, and said what you thought. During the fourth debate I spent the entire hour waiting for you to, at long last, mention Teheran, Yalta, Potsdam, or anything else that has gone on in the past for which we are now paying morally, spiritually, and financially, but never a word. Not one peep about how the Democrats sold us down the river in all these years. (Eisenhower has done his share too)'God help your children and my grandchildren if I am right."
