Description:

Richard Nixon
n.p., ca. April 1972
Richard and Pat Nixon SP Presented to Governor General of Canada Roland Michener
SP

Richard and Pat Nixon signed photograph. Photo measures 6.375" x 7.375", mounted to an overall size of 10.25" x 12.75". No place, April 1972. A candid photo of the President and First Lady in formal wear. Inscribed and signed on the mount below, "To His Excellency The Governor General and Mrs. Michener with appreciation for their gracious and attentive hospitality during our visit to Canada Richard Nixon / April 1972." Also signed, "Pat Nixon." Color has faded but presents well. With a few nicks along the right edge of the photo. Mount has dampstaining along right and bottom with some soiling. A historic memento from an important State Visit.

Richard Nixon visited Canada on April 13-15, 1972 during a period when U.S.-Canada relations had been somewhat strained, most pointedly Canada's more independent foreign policy stance under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Nixon and Trudeau signed the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, addressing pollution concerns in the Great Lakes, an important environmental accord demonstrating bilateral cooperation. Overall, the visit helped improve the personal relationship between Nixon and Trudeau, despite their different political philosophies and approaches to governance, and reinforced the importance of the US-Canada relationship.
