Rev. War Captain’s Widow Petitions for Aid Twice 1834

REVOLUTIONARY WAR. Two Manuscript Documents, being petitions brought to the Senate and House of Representatives of Pennsylvania by Mary McIlvain, as widow to Army Captain John McIlvain, for aid.

1) Manuscript Document, Signed by Mary McIlvain, “her mark”, 1p, 8.25” x 12.75”, Adams County, February 20, 1834. Docketing at verso. Heavy age wear, flattened folds with separation which are repaired with cello tape at verso, uneven edges, foxing, toning, else Fair condition.

In full, “The petition of the subscriber Mary McIlvain of Mount Pleasant Township Adams County respectively represents that your petitioner is a widow aged & infirm, that her income is small, & by no means equal to her wants. She also informed that she is the widow of the late John McIlvain Capt. In the army during the revolution, whose service & loss are well known to many of your Citizens: Your petitioner therefore, as the widow of a soldier of the revolution destitute of any equal support, as is your honorable lady to grant her aid & she will keep pray.” Following this is a certification by witnesses who state, that, “We the Subscribers do Certify that we remember and know of a certainty that John McIlvain was but in the Revolution. War.”

2) Manuscript Document, Signed by Mary McIlvain, “her Mark”, 1.25pp on bifold sheet, with integral address leaf, 8.25” x 13”, Adams County, March 4, 1834. Age worn, flattened mailing folds, soiling, opening tear at red wax seal, remnants of adhesive on second page, uneven edges, else Good condition.

In part, “The Petition of the Subscriber Mary McIlvain humbly sets forth – that your Petitioner is the Widow of the late Capt. John McIlvain of Mount Pleasant Township now Adams County Penn whose losses & sufferings during the Revolutionary…are well known…her Documents will sufficiently prove your petitioner further states that she became the wife of Capt. John McIlvain near the Close of the War while he held the Office of Capt. But cannot specify the date. Your petitioner further states that she is now poor and respectfully asks aid”.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
