Description:

Rev. War Invoice For Ammunition Made By A Former Prisoner of War

REVOLUTIONARY WAR. Manuscript Document Signed, "Jonth Dimon Lt Colo", 1p, 7.75" x 7", Fairfield, July 4, 1779. Additionally signed by Samuel Wyllys, “Saml Wyllys”, as Auditor, across the signatures of Justices of the Peace, Hezekiah Hubbell and George Burr. Flattened folds, slightly irregular margins, toning, ink show-through, scattered foxing, else near Fine.

The invoice is for funds due veteran Gershom Hubbell for "runing Balls" “Carting Powder & Balls” and "making Cartridges". Hubbell also charged the state for the services of his son as an express rider, “To my Son going to Norfield with an Express”.

Gershom Hubbell (1729-1803) Hubbell was a former prisoner of war captured at Fort Washington who, following his exchange, decided to remain out of active service. He performed work in support of his former comrades, many of whom are mentioned on this document -- Elisha Bradley, Sergeant Stephen Stratton, Ensign George Burr. They, together with Hubbell, served in a militia company commanded by Dimon in May 1775. Hubbell also served as a member of Captain Abel's Company in Bradley's Battalion, Wadsworth's Brigade for two years beginning in May 1776.

Jonathan Dimon was from also from Fairfield and began as a Captain of his own Fairfield Company in May 1775. He served in the Connecticut militia in the 4th Regiment commanded by Col. Gold S. Silliman of Fairfield from May 1775 to October 1776, and then by Col. Samuel Whiting from October 1776 to 1780. Dimon assumed command 1780 and continued in that position to 1782.

A fascinating document illustrating the small-scale domestic industry which proved indispensable to supplying American forces during the Revolutionary War.
