Coxe Tench 1755 - 1824 Request for stockings for the United States Army signed in type by Tench Coxe Printed Document Signed: "Tench Coxe" in type, one page, 8.5" x 6.25". Philadelphia, 180_. Boldly titled: "Fulled Half Stockings." Coxe informs the public that fulled half stockings "of Carded (not Combed) Wool of any dyed color, or of the natural colors of the Sheep, are occasionally purchased for the Army. They should weigh three pounds and one half per dozen. Each half stocking should be twelve inches long in the leg, with a foot of a good size for soldiers, or for men used to labor. Proposals for the certain delivery of parcels of not less than 100 pairs in each parcel, at Philadelphia, on or before the first day of March next for cash, with the prices, will be received at this office, with a sample, per mail." Printed at the lower left: "Purveyors Office, U.S./Philadelphia, [blank] 180[blank]." Date was not filled in.

A member of the Continental Congress in 1789, Tench Cox served as Purveyor of Public Supplies under Jefferson and Madison from 1803-1812. In this office, Coxe encouraged the American firearms industry and procured arms for militias in the period leading up to the War of 1812. Frayed at right edge, else in fine condition.
