Lincoln Abraham

“An act to authorize and require the County Commissioners Court of Sangamon County to build a Toll Bridge over the Sangamon River,” autograph document signed by Alexander P. Field, Illinois Secretary of State, January 18, 1836, Vandalia, Illinois.2 pp., 8.25" x 8.5".

On December 24, 1835, Senator Archer Herndon from Sangamon County, father of Lincoln’s future law partner William H. Herndon, introduced this bill in the Illinois Senate to direct the Sangamon County Commissioners to construct a toll bridge over the Sangamon River on the road from Springfield to Peoria. The Senate passed the bill on January 2, 1836, and referred it to the House of Representatives. There, on January 11, Representative Abraham Lincoln proposed an amendment to add a second bridge over the Sangamon further downriver to the west, and the House passed the amended bill. Later that same day, the Senate rejected Lincoln’s amendments. On January 13, Lincoln made a motion to drop his amendments to the bill, and the House agreed. On January 14, Governor Joseph Duncan signed the bill into law. This copy was prepared by Secretary of State Alexander P. Field a few days later and made official by the Illinois State Seal.
