Description:

Begin Menachem

Prime Minister Begin Writes of Two Israeli Settlements in the West Bank, Halfway between Jerusalem & Tel-Aviv

Typed Letter Signed “M. Begin” as Prime Minister of Israel, in Hebrew, 1p, 8.5” x 10.75”. Fully translated. Jerusalem, Israel, September 9, 1980. To David Schneer, Givatayim (city east of Tel Aviv). On Prime Minister stationery. Two file holes in blank right margin. Expertly strengthened at folds on verso. Two letter edits in Begin’s hand. Toned. Very Good condition.

In part, “I am very interested in the restoration of Modi’in. Obviously, we should not underestimate the establishment of the settlement of Matityahu; immigrants from the Soviet Union are Jews like us. But perhaps there should also be another settlement nearby. I will forward your letter to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Ariel Sharon, and I will ask him to look at your proposal. The plan does not need to include ‘Beit Menachem’; the other houses you wrote about will absolutely suffice. The entire matter has no connection at all to elections, and I wonder if in one of your questions you have perhaps confused the renewal of Modi’in with ‘Election Period.’ Happy New Year.”

Modi’in and Matityahu are Israeli settlements in the West Bank approximately halfway between Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv.
