Beatles, Signed Card Circa 1963 When Playing in Andover England

Spectacular Fab Four signed card Circa 1963, 3 5/8" x 2 1/2". Signed by all four, "John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Star, Paul McCartney" on the back of a business card of Bruce Turner and the Senator's Rhythm Group in Andover (England). Signed circa May 1963 when the Beetles played with Roy Orbison. At the time they were the back-up band! Light toning and wear commensurate with age. Accompanied by a vintage 1983 black and white postcard which depicts the Beatles from 1964. The card image has toning to the outer edge. It has a "REAL" certificate signed by noted Beatles expert Roger Epperson.

The Roy Orbison/The Beatles Tour was a 1963 concert tour of the United Kingdom by Roy Orbinson and the Beatles. Other acts on the tour included Gerry and the Pacemakers, David Macbeth, Louise Cordet, Tony Marsh, Terry Young Six, Erkey Grant, and Ian Crawford. It was Orbison's first, and the Beatles' third nationwide tour of the UK. Although Orbison was originally intended to be the headlining act, the reaction to the Beatles on the tour caused them to be promoted to co-headliners, with the Beatles closing the set in the traditional headlining spot.

The Beatles' typical set list from that era was:

  1. "Some Other Guy" (John Lennon)
  2. "Do You Want to Know a Secret?" (George Harrison)
  3. "Love Me Do" or "A Taste of Honey" (Paul McCartney)
  4. "From Me To You" (John Lennon)
  5. "Please Please Me" (John Lennon)
  6. "I Saw Her Standing There" (Paul McCartney)
  7. "Twist and Shout" or "Long Tall Sally" (John Lennon or Paul McCartney)

“Dear Mr. Epstein,

We don’t like your boys’ sound. Groups of guitarists are on the way out.”

This was the opening line of a letter written by Decca Record’s London A&R man, Dick Rowe, turning down The Beatles after an audition Jan. 1, 1962. It was the biggest mistake ever made in the music industry.

Undaunted by the rebuff, The Beatles forged ahead like a juggernaut, finally attaining a #1 chart hit with “Please Please Me” in February 1963. March 9, less than a month later, their second U.K. tour began in London’s East Ham. Since the tour contract had been signed well before they charted and Brian Epstein always honored his contracts, the boys received bottom-of-the-bill wages consisting of £80 a week (for all four), including expenses.

Americans Tommy Roe and Chris Montez headlined the tour but after the first performance realized it was impossible to follow The Beatles. Roe said, “It was complete mayhem at the theatre with hundreds of screaming girls rushing the stage like lemmings. They were completely out of control, with only a few theatre staff and usherettes trying to keep some sort of order. How could you possibly follow that?” Subsequently, Roe and Montez agreed to drop down the bill, letting The Beatles close out the shows. The same fate would happen to Roy Orbison on his May 1963 tour when the Big “O,” with great dignity, also dropped down the bill.
