Andrew Jackson Signed Indiana Land Deed

Land deed signed by President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) as "Andrew Jackson" at lower right. Recorded at Washington, D.C. on January 4, 1831. The document, which is partly printed and partly handwritten on a single vellum sheet measuring 9.5" x 15.875" overall, was also signed at lower right by Elijah Hayward (1786-1864), Commissioner of the United States General Land Office between 1830-1835. Bearing a beautifully intact embossed United States General Land Office seal at lower left. In very good to near fine condition, with expected light paper folds and isolated foxing along bottom edge. Some of the clerk's handwriting has faded but Jackson's signature is large and bold.

Certificate No. 2030 granted 80 acres of land in Vincennes, Indiana to Christopher C. Hiddle of Vermillion County, Indiana. The land extended from "the West half of the South East quarter of Section Twenty Three in Township Fifteen North of Range Ten West in the District of Lands Subject to Sale at Vincennes Indiana..." Vincennes is located near the Indiana / Illinois border approximately 90 miles south of Vermillion County.

Christopher C. Hiddle had purchased land in Vigo County, Indiana, about 30 miles south of Vermillion County, in 1818. In 1836, Hiddle petitioned the Indiana House of Representatives regarding the placement of a state road.

Indiana joined the Union in 1816. Along with land redistribution, early Hoosiers focused on building up the state's infrastructure. Its first roadways, canals, and railroads would have been in place by the early 1830s.
