Rachel Jackson, wife of Andrew Jackson, writes a letter to David Cowan, offering her husband's power of political patronage to help relieve his family's distress. Only shortly before, General Andrew Jackson was appointed U.S. Commission and Governor of Florida by President James Monroe. Letter shown in part below:

"I . . . have read in tears the distresses which seem to threaten you and your helpless family. If there be any office within the gift of Mr. Jackson, which can relieve your condition, I will with pleasure use my exertions in obtaining it for you. He will be in town in a few days, at which time he will answer your petition. In the mean time I will be glad to see you and lady."

In July of 1821, Andrew Jackson appointed David Cowan Port Warden of Pensacola.

Within seven years Andrew Jackson runs for the Presidential Office and is elected President, however the brutal mudslinging beset upon his wife during the campaigning led to her physical demise which was already compromised. Just after Jackson won the presidential election, Rachel’s final downturn in her illness began. She died on December 22, 1828. Her death devastated Andrew. Even though her maladies began as early as 1825, Jackson always blamed his political enemies for her death.

An incredibly scarce letter signed by Rachel Jackson. This letter sold 12 years ago for over $5500.
