Description:

Late 19th C. Photography
[Paris, France], ca. 1880-1900
Post-Baron Haussmann Paris! Lovely Photograph of Avenue du Bois de Boulogne Looking Towards Arc de Triomphe
Photograph

A lovely photograph showing fashionable Belle Époque Parisians enjoying the results of Baron Haussmann's ambitious urban beautification projects. N.d. but ca. 1880-1900. The panoramic view shows horse-drawn carriages, workers, policemen, and well-dressed inhabitants milling along the Avenue du Bois de Boulogne. The sepia-colored albumen print is inscribed in the plate at lower left: "620 Paris Perspective de l'Avenue du Bois de Boulogne." It is affixed to its original mat. Expected wear including isolated scuffs and superficial wrinkles to the photo surface. The mat exhibits uneven toning, as well as minor isolated mat burn and water stains. Pencil-inscribed by a former collector along the bottom edge of the mat. Mat-burned, foxed, and tape-edged verso. Else very good to near fine. The actual size of the photograph is 11" x 8.875" while the overall mat size is 15.875" x 12.875."

The Avenue du Bois de Boulogne (present day Avenue Foch) terminates on one end with the Arc de Triomphe at l'Étoile, an intersection of twelve radiating avenues. The avenue leads on the other end to the Porte Dauphine, the gateway to the sprawling Bois de Boulogne. The avenue, along with many others like it, represented Baron Haussmann's urban improvements to Paris, formerly very much a medieval city. Opened in 1854 for use, the Avenue du Bois de Boulogne eventually spanned 4,300 feet and was extremely wide in order to accommodate vehicle traffic and sidewalks. The sweeping avenue was flanked by gardens on either side (present day Jardins de l'Avenue Foch) which contained trees and plantings from around the world. The Avenue du Bois de Boulogne was functional, but it also fulfilled a very specific social purpose, allowing fashionable Parisians to see and be seen during promenades.
