Description:

Pizzaro's Ship's Navigator Signature C.1550 Important Americas Exploration!

The clipped signature of Hern'n Gallego, one of the navigators for the fleet of Francisco Pizzaro, conqueror of Peru, ca. 1550s-1570s. 1 p., 3.25" x 1.125", N.p., N.d. The signature slip is likely taken from a larger letter or document and has been mounted to a small captioned card. This autograph represents a link to the Spanish conquest of the western coast of South America and its continuing exploration of the Pacific Ocean from Peru. Later in the sixteenth century, Spain used ports in Peru and Mexico to launch exploratory expeditions into the Pacific Ocean. Boldly signed, very good.

Historical Background:

Hern'n Gallego (ca. 1514-ca. 1570) was born in Coruna, Spain. He was the first navigator to perform a west-to-east crossing of the Straits of Magellan on a voyage from Chile in 1553, and three years later, in 1556, he served as a navigator on the expedition of Spanish explorer Juan Ladrillero (ca. 1490-1559) to take possession of the Straits of Magellan for Spain. He later was appointed chief navigator for Spanish explorer Alvaro de Menda'a de Neira (1542-1595) on a voyage from 1567 to 1569, during which they discovered the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu. He likely died in a shipwreck in 1570, but there is a record of a man named Hern'n Gallego bequeathing an estate to the Augustinian Friars of Chile in 1606.

Spanish conquistador and explorer Francisco Pizarro Gonz'lez (ca. 1478-1541) first sailed from Spain to the New World in 1509 on an expedition to Urab' in the southwestern Caribbean. In 1513, he accompanied Vasco N''ez de Balboa in crossing the isthmus of Panama, where they were the first Europeans to see the Pacific Ocean from the Americas. Pizarro served as the mayor of the newly founded Panama City for a few years and undertook two failed expeditions to Peru. In 1529, he received permission from the Spanish crown to lead another expedition to conquer Peru. Pizarro's third expedition was more successful, and with the assistance of conquistador Hernando de Soto, he captured the Incan emperor Atahualpa in November 1532. After Incan supporters filled a room with gold and two with silver to ransom Atahualpa, Pizzaro bowed to pressure from his soldiers, charged Atahualpa with various crimes, and executed him in July 1533, while De Soto was away on a reconnaissance mission. Both De Soto and King Charles I of Spain condemned the execution of Atahualpa. Later that year, Pizarro captured the Inca capital of Cuzco and completed the conquest of Peru. In January 1535, he founded the city of Lima, but he was assassinated in 1541.
