Governor Henry authorized the transfer of 500 acres of land in then Jefferson County, Virginia near "Sinking Creek a Branch of Ohio" to wealthy landowner Andrew Hynes (1750-1800) from Richmond, Virginia on August 11, 1786. The property's previous owner Alexander Woodrow had had the land surveyed on May 12, 1784; surveyors provided an exact description of the tract by referring to physical landmarks like cherry, hickory, Spanish and white oak trees.

"IN WITNESS whereof, the said Patrick Henry Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of VIRGINIA, hath hereunto set his Hand, and caused the lesser Seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed at Richmond, on the Eleventh Day of August in the Year of our Lord, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty-six and of the Commonwealth the Eleventh."

Andrew Hynes was one of the founders of the Constitution of Kentucky, which formalized its severance from Virginia and marked its statehood in 1792. Hynes was also one of the founding settlers of modern day Elizabethtown, Kentucky (then known as Severns Valley), along the central-northern border of Kentucky. During the early years of settlement, Hynes gave his name to a massive triangular fort he constructed in the Valley to protect white frontier settlers from Indian raids. The Revolutionary War veteran was also a surveyor, possibly a merchant, and later held several important local and state offices. He served as a court judge, chief militia officer, and state assemblyman. Upon his death, Hynes owned at least 10,000 acres, of which this 500-acre grant had once been part.

Patrick Henry was one of the most eloquent mouthpieces of the American Revolution. Indeed, his declaration "Give me Liberty or give me Death!", delivered at the Second Virginia Convention in 1775, is one of the most famous quotes in American history. The lawyer used his rhetorical flare to advance the cause of revolutionary politics throughout the 1760s-1770s. This document dates from his second gubernatorial term, from 1784-1786.
