Description:

Hitchcock Alfred

First edition paperback copy of Bar the doors! Terror Stories Selected by Alfred Hitchcock signed by Hitchcock as "Alfred Hitchcock, 1979" and illustrated with his caricature on the front end leaf. Published in 1946 by Dell Publishing Company (New York), Bar the doors! was No. 143 of its wildly popular "Map Back" series. In very good to near fine condition. Covers with minor edge chipping, a few corner folds, isolated water stains to top verso, and some peeling laminate but otherwise gloriously graphic and in color. Isolated surface roughness between the front cover and front end leaf along the spine. The inner pages are clean but toned. The book measures 4.25" x 6.375" x .375".

The book runs 192 pages and includes 15 short stories by leading twentieth-century horror and mystery writers. As Hitchcock explained in his editor's foreword "Speaking of Terror", the stories were selected "because of their skillful handling of the element of terror." The stories run the gamut from the supernatural to the gruesome. "Wouldn't it be well, my friends, to bar the doors before you commence to read this assortment of chills and shivers?", Hitchcock asked in the foreword.

The laminated front and back book covers are emblazoned with bold and colorful mid-century pulp illustrations by Gerald Cregg (1907-1985). The front cover depicts a hair-covered hand pierced by a spike, and the back cover shows the jungle landscape described in H. G. Wells's "Pollock and the Porroh Man." Known for his mastery of the airbrush technique, Cregg worked at Dell between 1943-1950.

Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) had a prolific 50-year-long directorial career that included over sixty films. This well-defined signature and doodle are even more remarkable when one considers Hitchcock's debilitating end-of-life arthritis. The aging filmmaker was working on a script just months before his death of renal failure in April 1980.
