Description:

Wright Orville 1871 - 1948 Framed Display! A swatch of fabric from the Kitty Hawk Wright Flyer, a mechanical piece from a Wright B Flyer, and a signed check of Orville Wright. Comprises:

(1) Partly Printed Check Signed "Orville Wright," 8.25" x 3". Dayton, Ohio, April 5, 1930. Drawn on the City National Bank and Trust Company, Dayton, Ohio, payable to "The Pennsylvania R.R. Co." for $25.95. Tiny cancellation holes not near signature. Fine condition.

(2) Swatch of fabric from the Wright Flyer which made the first heavier-than-air flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903, 2 cm x 1.5 cm (approximately 0.75" x 0.6"). Provenance: Photocopy of a blue ink notation on "Fabric from / Wright Brothers / ‰Û÷Kitty Hawk' / Harvey D. Geyer / 3-2-51." Period typing on the photocopied sheet above the fabric: "All of the fabric for covering the original Kitty Hawk plane / was muslin, purchased from Hunter & Hardy Dry Goods Store E. Third Street, Dayton Ohio, and known as 'Pride of the West' muslin." In late 1926, early 1927, Orville Wright refurbished the Wright Flyer in preparation for loaning it to the Science Museum in London, where it stayed until 1948. During this refurbishment, the airplane was recovered entirely with new "Pride of the West" muslin. Harvey D. Geyer was a close friend, associate and employee of the Wright Brothers from 1910 on, and upon the death of Orville Wright in 1948, was appointed as the technical advisor to the Wright Estate.

(3) Bright nickel turnbuckle from the World War I-period Wright B Flyers, 5.25" long. The Model b Flyer was the world's first mass-produced airplane, designed by Orville and Wilbur Wright to correct earlier flight problems. Turnbuckles were used on the bracing wires that held the propeller shafts in alignment. Provenance: Given to Louis P. Christman for his work in restoring the 1905 Wright Flyer, they have descended directly in his family. As Orville and Wilbur Wright had never produced a complete set of drawings or blueprints for any of their flyers, Louis P. Christman was commissioned to complete not only a set of drawings for the 1905 Flyer, but also the 1900, 1901, and 1902 Gliders, and the 1903 and 1904 Flyers. Christman, an employee of National Cash Register, worked closely with Orville Wright to produce an accurate set of drawings. Matted together with the iconic photographic image of the first flight at Kitty Hawk picturing Orville at the controls and Wilbur running alongside, and a metallic identification plate: "Orville Wright / 1871-1948." Framed to 15" x 19".
