Rare White House Envelope Signed "Richard Nixon," 7.25" x 3.75". EUROPA Key to European Unity 30 pfennig German postage stamp affixed, postmarked "Berlin / US-PRÄSIDENT / R. NIXON / IN BERLIN / 27.2.1969." Addressed to a collector in Bad Godesberg, Germany. Typed in the blank left portion, beneath the engraved "THE WHITE HOUSE" is: "Canceled on the day that / President Nixon visited Berlin. / Only 25 covers were prepared on / White House envelopes." Fine condition.



Inaugurated on January 20, 1969, in his first presidential trip abroad, President Richard Nixon addressed the German Bundestag (parliament) in Bonn on February 26, 1969, and visited West Berlin on February 27th. He had attended the 23rd meeting of the North Atlantic (NATO) Council in Brussels, Belgium (February 23-24, 1969), and, informally, was received by Queen Elizabeth II and spoke with Prime Minister Harold Wilson in London (February 24-26), before going to West Germany. The President continued on to Rome (February 26-27), meeting with Italian leaders, and then met with President Charles de Gaulle in Paris (February 28-March 2). President Nixon had an audience with Pope Paul VI at the Vatican on March 2nd before returning home to Washington.
