William M. Tweed
Albany, NY, ca. 1872-73
New York 1872-73 Senatorial Photo Album ft. William "Boss" Tweed & Tammany Associates
Album
Photographic Senatorial album from the state of New York's 1872-73 Session, once belonging to Senator T.I. Chatfield of the 24th District. Quatro, 9.5" x 11". With nicely printed title page and 35 large (5.75" x 7.5") albumen portraits of each New York Senator, on thick card leaves with the signatures of the subjects on the mounts below. Signed by all save William B. Woodin (1824-1893) of the 25th District. Published by R. E. Churchill, Photographer, Albany, New York. Featuring contemporary full morocco and gilt detailing, with the name of Senator Chatfield stamped on front cover. Heavy to moderate wear at hinges and corners, with areas of leather rubbing throughout. Slight curling to pages within, otherwise very good. A scarce autographic record of the New York State legislative body!

Notable signers include Governor John T. Hoffman, the last New York City Mayor to be elected Governor to date, Lieutenant Governor Allen C. Beach, and the infamous William M. "Boss" Tweed, corrupt leader of Tammany Hall from 1858 to 1871. The 1872-73 session proved to be Tweed's final year of public office, with his re-election the result of overwhelming popularity within his district despite a brewing scandal that lead to his arrest a month later.

Thomas Ives Chatfield (1818-1884) was an American merchant and politician from New York. He notably served as a delegate to the 1868 Republican National Convention and, during New York state elections the next year, ran on the Republican ticket for Treasurer. Later, from 1872 to 1873, Chatfield became Senator of New York's 24th District.
