Webster penned this letter while serving his second period in the Senate. He had very recently lost two of his children; Webster's son Edward died of typhoid fever in January 1848 while serving in the Mexican-American War, and his daughter Julia died of tuberculosis in April 1848. To Reverend S. K. Lothrop, in full: "We are going to Marshfield for a few days, but I cannot leave without thanking you more cordially for all your affectionate kindness to us, in our afflictions. You & Mrs. Lothrop are of those friends whose regard I have enjoyed for a great part of life; & those connected with you, respectively, my Seniors, now no more, & Mary's dear sisters & brother, all are fresh & glowing, in my memory & my affections.

My dear son & daughter loved you & Mrs. Lothrop sincerely; & your respect for them, & sympathy at their loss goes to the very bottom of my heart. May God in his goodness preserve you & yours; while I yet live, it will be a pleasure to see you, to cherish mutual affection & to witness your happiness & your usefulness to society. Both of you possess all my good wishes & my sincere love. Mrs. Webster unites in affectionate regards."

Daniel Webster was an American lawyer and statesman who represented New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress and served as the 14th and 19th U.S. secretary of state under presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. He was one of the most prominent American lawyers of the 19th century, arguing over 200 cases before the United States Supreme Court in his career. During his life, Webster had been a member of the Federalist Party, the National Republican Party, and the Whig Party. He was among the three members of the Great Triumvirate along with Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun.

Samuel Kirkland Lothrop (1804-1886) was an American clergyman. He graduated from Harvard University in 1825 and Harvard Divinity School in 1828. In 1829, Lothrop was ordained pastor of the Unitarian church in Dover, New Hampshire, and in 1834, he took charge of the Brattle Square Church in Boston, Massachusetts. A doctorate of divinity was conferred on him by Harvard in 1852.
