Description:

Native American - Rare Native American letter to and docketed by General James Wilkinson from Fort Adams in 1795.

Autograph letter signed by John Breck and addressed to Brigadier General James Wilkinson, 12" x 7", dated December 23, 1795. Lt. Breck reports to his commanding officer that his troops must be put on half rations of flour as the supply is running low. He also informs Wilkinson that: "The Indians have chiefly gone from this place."

This piece was acquired from Forest H. Sweet in 1960.

Fort Adams was built on St. Mary's River, near what is now Rockford, Ohio by Anthony Wayne in 1794. A few years before this period were the French and Indian Wars. The Miamis and the Shawnees and other tribes were then entrenched in their stronghold at Fort Wayne. General Anthony Wayne made his way diagonally across Mercer County to the St. Marys where he built Fort Adams, a temporary relay station and supply depot, where Wayne and his army dealt the Indians many defeats.
