Native American -

The case of an ox stolen by an Indian in Cape Cod. Document signed, 2p, 6.25" x 7.5", Barnstable [Massachusetts], January 15, 1744, written on plain paper. Overall very good condition.

The document reads in part: "...Jeremiah Judes of lawful age testifieth and saith that that he being in in His Majesties Goals in Barnstable. In the fall of the year past when Joseah Pocknet was brought to goals on suspicion of his stealing an ox from Mr. Samuel...told him if you won't say any more about that meat you say you had of my wife I will give you twenty shillings..whereupon Josiah Pocknet said if he would say no more about it he would give him forty shillings and pay all ye charge...that sd Josiah persuaded him to say it upon some body else..."

In 1745, Jeremiah Judes, an Indian from Nantucket, was once again in His Majesty's Goals in Barnstable, this time for the murder of a fellow member of his tribe. Originally sentenced to death, the sentence was reduced to life in prison due to technicalities in the trial.
