Description:

Straus Nathan

Nathan Straus, co-owner of Macy's Department store, handsome signature

Paper slip signed by successful department store mogul Nathan Straus (1848-1931) as "Nathan Straus". The slip, which was part of a larger business document, is inscribed in a secretarial hand: " … you and your co-workers then, I remain Very cordially yours". In very good condition, with toning affecting part of signature. Slip is mounted on black background. Overall measuring 5.375" x 2.375".

Straus's signature on a business document is very appropriate, as the millionaire dominated turn-of-the-century New York mercantile circles. Straus and his family were German Jews who immigrated to the antebellum American South. After the Civil War, the Straus family relocated to New York and set up a glass and crockery concern. That business became so lucrative that the Straus brothers, comprised of Nathan (born 1848), Isidore (born 1845; he later died on the Titanic), and Oscar (born 1850), partnered with the department store juggernaut Macy's in 1888, and became co-owners after 1896. Nathan Straus became a fervent Zionist in later life, and this informed his philanthropy. Straus regularly provided meals, pasteurized milk, lodging, coal, medical care, and employment to the urban poor.
