Description:

Napoleon Bonaparte ANS, Hair, Portrait In Superb Display!

Three relics related to French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), with provenance from reputable consignors: an autograph note signed by Napoleon as "Np"; a lock of Napoleon's hair; and a lovely hand-painted portrait of Napoleon in uniform, all contained in a magnificent period shadowbox frame. The Neo-Classical style brass easel frame is decorated with stylized ribbon, floral, and vegetal motifs, and crowned with a laurel wreath. The hair, portrait, and autograph note signed are displayed behind glass in descending order of size against a velvet mat. An "A" shaped possible maker's mark is engraved near the top of the easel extension verso. Expected wear to the velvet mat including fading and scattered loss. The brass elements show isolated verdigris and the frame backing is slightly loose, else near fine. Not examined out of the frame. The frame measures 8.125" x 12" x .75" overall.

The lot consists of:

1. An autograph note in French signed by Bonaparte as "Np" at the conclusion, comprised of approximately 14 words. Napoleon directs his subordinates to hurry to follow those who have not deserted. Paris, France. December 27, 1810. Expected wear including folds, toning/browning, and isolated areas of discoloration, else very good to near fine. The sight size is 3.125" x 2.25." Any examples of Napoleon's handwritten notes are very rare and can alone sell for thousands of dollars.

2. A lock of Napoleon's hair, blonde in appearance and consisting of approximately two dozen strands, secured at the center of an oval-shaped overture. The hair measures about 1.25" in length.

3. A hand-painted miniature of Napoleon wearing a red-faced green uniform, watercolor and gouache on an unknown mount (probably porcelain, bone, or ivory). No visible signature. Isolated paint flaking and discrete paint retouching along the left edge, else near fine. Approximately 3" x 2.25."

Provenance

The Napoleon relics were gifted to the previous consignor's father, Robert D. Foglia, Sr., by an Italian art and antiques collector named Conte Giancarlo Bossi Pucci (1931-1988) in Switzerland in the 1970s. Foglia, Sr. was a lawyer and an international corporate consultant who represented Sophia Loren's husband Robert Vesco; Richard Nixon's younger brother, Donald Nixon; and Saudi Arabian royalty, among many other high-profile clients.
