Rock 'n Roll

8.75" x 11" semi-glossy black and white photograph of American blues musicians Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Little Walter, and Louis Myers signed by Muddy Waters as "Muddy Waters", James Cotton as "JAMES COTTON", and Luther Johnson as "Luther Johnson" in blue pen in center vertical margin. Photo predates 1976, the year that Luther Johnson died of brain cancer in a Massachusetts hospital. In very good condition. The "a" of Waters's signature is slightly smeared. A handful of surface abrasions/tears have been repaired with tape verso. Photo is partly adhered to cardboard backing. Comes with a copy of JSA Letter of Authenticity from group lot.

This photo montage shows mostly close-up portraits of five of the most pivotal American blues artists of the mid-twentieth century, signed by three of them: Muddy Waters (1913-1983), James Cotton (1935-2017), and Luther "Snake Boy" Johnson (1934-1976).

McKinley Morganfield aka Muddy Waters is sometimes called the "father of modern Chicago blues". This vocalist, guitarist, and harmonica player emerged on the national scene during the post-war period with his eponymous band. Waters collaborated with singer/songwriter, harmonica player, and drummer James Cotton, singer/songwriter and guitarist Luther Johnson, and singer, guitarist, and harmonica player Little Walter Jacobs (1930-1968) over his forty-year-long career. Muddy Waters was a six-time Grammy winner whose songs "Rollin' Stone" (1950), "Hootchie Cootchie Man" (1954), "Mannish Boy" (1955), and "Got My Mojo Working" (1957) were classified among the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock 'n Roll.
