Description:

Judaica

Moses Seixas, Namesake of George Washington's Correspondent and of a Notable Jewish New York Family

Seixas, Moses. [Judaica]. Manuscript indenture signed by Moses Seixas and several others. New York. Oct. 1, 1810 & May 15, 1829. Folio. [5]pp., stitched at top with ribbon. Old folds, lightly foxed. Very good.

Manuscript mortgage indenture between Moses Seixas and New York City merchant Elias Bloy for the sum of $1,260. The first page contains the terms of the indenture between the two men, and it is signed by Bloy and witnessed by John Severidge, Jr.  A second document is attached to the first by means of a ribbon, passing the indenture from Moses Seixas to one Francis Caille, “Tin man,” also of New York; Seixas has signed on the third page. The document goes on to pass the mortgage from Francis Caille to John James Labouisse on May 15, 1829.

Moses B. Seixas (1780-1839) was a member of a prominent New York Jewish family.  He was the namesake of the more famous Moses Mendes Seixas (1744-1809) who was a prominent member of the first synagogue in America at Newport, and who corresponded with George Washington about religious freedom. The present Moses Seixas would appear to be his nephew, the son of Benjamin Mendes Seixas. A nice association piece of early 19th-century Judaica.
