Moe Howard Lengthy ALS to Fan Re: The Last Three Stooges Film, Unmade Projects, & Cartoon Spinoff
ALS
A letter from Moe Howard to one John Ewaniuk, a lifelong Three Stooges fan. 1p on personal stationary, 7.25" x 10.5", Los Angeles, CA, June 1, 1971. Boldly signed at conclusion as "Moe Howard", the comedian answers a series of questions posed by Ewaniuk in a previous letter. Topics covered include the final Three Stooges film "Kook's Tour", recordings made for Hanna-Barbera, and references to unmade projects. Together with its original envelope, all addressed in Moe's hand, and a bonus Three Stooges greeting card, ca. 1980. Expected letter folds, age toning, and light creasing throughout. Usual weather to envelope, with opening cut along top edge. Else, near fine.

In part:

"Dear friend John:

Thank you very much for your most appreciated letter and 3 Stooges cartoons.
I will try to answer your questions to the best of my ability. It is nice to know that we are appreciated around your house. I am in the process, now, of writing a book about myself, my family and the 3 Stooges... We made a one hour comedy travelogue called "Kook's Tour" which most likely not be aired until late fall and we intend making others. We never made the one about the Canadian Bush Pilots, the company ran out of funds…

Our Producer, Director designed the cartoon characters and we made them independently. We did make several long play record albums one of which was for Hanna and Barbera. No there were no comic books made with the original Curly or Joe Besser. Your cartoon drawings show excellent capabilities and your poem is really delightful and extremely imaginative. I am certain that you will go far in whatever field you choose...".

"Kook's Tour" (1975) was a television film originally produced in 1969 and marketed as the last production to star The Three Stooges. It was first intended to act as a pilot for a new series, but Larry suffered a debilitating stroke that paralyzed the left side of his body before filming could be completed. It was not until several years later that its director and Moe's son-in-law, Norman Maurer, assumed the responsibility of condensing the salvageable material into a 52-minute film, distributed in 1975.

The completion of Moe's autobiography, "Moe Howard and the Three Stooges", would be delayed several years after this letter was written. Indeed, he spent his final days working on it before his death in May 1975, whereupon Howard's daughter, Joan Howard Maurer, completed her father's book and it was eventually published in 1977.
