It was the most significant land battle of the Spanish-American War. The image of 39-year-old Col. Theodore Roosevelt charging up San Juan and Kettle Hill with his Rough Riders was celebrated by newspapers and popular songs. It led to his election as Governor of New York four months later and his selection and election as President McKinley's Vice President in 1900.
