Maxim Gorky Signed & Inscribed Portrait Photo, ca. 1932
Signed photograph
A portrait photograph of writer Maxim Gorky, after photographer Moisei Nappelbaum, dated October 27, 1932. Signed and inscribed in Russian Cyrillic along the lower margin, with the date abbreviated as "27.X.32". 1p, 4.5" x 6.75". The photo's top left and right corners remain fixed to the mount while the lower corners are detached; isolated creasing at left of the same. With areas of light soiling throughout, not affecting text. Overall, very good- boldly signed!

Alexei Maximovich Peshkov (1868-1936), popularly known as Maxim Gorky, was a prominent Russian writer five times nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Before his success as an author, he travelled widely across the Russian Empire changing jobs frequently, experiences which later influenced his writing. Gorky also shared notable associations with fellow Russian writers Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov, both of whom were mentioned by him in his memoirs.

For a significant part of his life Gorky was exiled from Russia, and later the Soviet Union, after criticizing both the Tsarist and Bolshevik regimes during the Russian Civil War and the 1920s, condemning the latter for political repressions. Later in 1928 he returned to the USSR on Joseph Stalin's personal invitation, and lived there from 1932 until his death in June 1936. Indeed, the offered photo marks an important transitional period, having been signed the year of his permanent return to Russia.
