Description:

Maurice Sendak Graphite Study Drawing for "Pleasant Fieldmouse", Ex. Jan Wahl Estate

Superb highly detailed original graphite drawing by Maurice Sendak of "Pleasant" the fieldmouse. The piece is a graphite study drawing of the title page vignette for Jan Wahl's book "Pleasant Fieldmouse" which Sendak fully illustrated. ("Pleasant Fieldmouse" was published in 1964, shortly after Sendak won the 1964 Caldecott Award.). Ex: The Jan Wahl Estate. The artwork will be accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from Michael Wahl, brother of Jan Wahl and the Executor of Jan Wahl's Estate.

The art depicts 'Pleasant", wearing his cap (crafted from a red bottle cap off a soda bottle) , and is shown holding his fly swatter with a broken handle which was used to stomp out fires. The mouse wanted to be a fireman, and his dress code was part of his own devised firefighting uniform. The fantastic Sendak drawing is a rendering for the title page vignette, and shows the details of his bottle cap hat, whiskers, little toes, and even the cross hatching on the important fly swatter. The sheet size of the drawing is 7" x 10.5" and is presented matted alongside a copy of the title page vignette from the book, and Sendak's signature and autographed address from an envelope used to send a letter to Jan Wahl. A perfect pairing of illustrator and author, the two frequently communicated, and several of Sendak's autographed, signed letters to Jan are found in other lots in this auction. The final matted size is 19.25" x 15.25".

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
