Lot of five items, comprises:

1)  Typed Letter Signed, "Elihu Root", 1 p., on Department of State letterhead, June 14, 1904, Washington, 8" x 10", to the Honorable John Dalzell, regarding the Foreign Missionary Society's claim against the British Government.  Expected mailing folds, toning, minor soiling, else Very Good.

Elihu Root (1845 -1937) was an American lawyer and statesman who served as Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt and as Secretary of War under Roosevelt and President William McKinley. He moved frequently between high-level appointed government positions in Washington, D.C. and private-sector legal practice in New York City. He was elected by the state legislature as a United States Senator from New York and served one term, 1909–1915. Root was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912.

2) Autograph Letter Signed, "L. McLane", 1 p. bifolium, October 10, 1845, London, 8" x 10".  Docket of receipt on verso.  Expected folds, very minor toning, else Fine.

Louis McLane (1786-1857) was an American lawyer and politician.  He was President Jackson's very able, but not well-liked Secretary of State.  McLane eventually returned to diplomacy in 1845 when President James K. Polk appointed him United States Minister to Great Britain.

3) Manuscript Document Signed, "Wm. H. Crawford", 4 pp. bifolium, May 9, 1806, Georgia, 8.25" x 13.25", being a Superior Court legal document, a petition on behalf of Archelary Pope vs. Ebenezer H. Cummins. Expected folds, some separation and paper loss, remnants of cello tape at verso, toning, soiling, uneven edges.   

William H. Crawford (1772-1834) was an American politician and judge during the early19th century. In 1813, President James Madison appointed Crawford as the United States minister to France during the waning years of Napoleon's First French Empire. Crawford served until 1815, shortly after the end of the Napoleonic Wars.  Crawford served as both United States Secretary of War and United States Secretary of the Treasury before he ran for president in the 1824 election as a Democratic-Republican, where he finished third in electoral votes in the four-candidate race.

4) Autograph Letter Signed, "Rt. Smith", 1 p., October 6, 1801, "Navy Dept.", 8" x 9.75", to Stephan Moylan, regarding a pension for seaman William Barry.  Expected folds, separation and paper loss at right and left edges not affecting text of letter or signature, toning, cello tape remnants at verso.

Robert Smith (1757-1842) was the second United States Secretary of the Navy from 1801 to 1809, and served as Secretary of State under President James Madison from 1809 until 1811. Smith’s controversial appointment and clashes with Madison influenced his service as Secretary of State. He was the brother of Senator Samuel Smith.

5) Letter Signed, "Geo: M. Bibb", 1 p. bifolium, February 27, 1845, "Treasury Department", 8" x 10", to the Honorable David Levy regarding a salary claim by the "Keeper of the Light House on Dog Island".  Expected folds, separation and chips at edges, grubbiness to verso, 

George M. Bibb (1776 - 1859) was appointed President Tyler's fourth Secretary of the Treasury in 1844, upon the resignation of John C. Spencer. He was a very aged man when he assumed the Treasury position, dressing "in antique style, with knee breeches."  After this, he was a lawyer in Washington and an assistant in the United States Attorney General's office.  He was an active Freemason.

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third Party Shipping Option: If a third party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers.
